Every year for more than a century 8 March has been recognised as International Women’s Day. Many governments and organisations across the world mark the occasion celebrating the role and rights of women. At LifewithArt in Aberdeen we celebrated this special day with Grampians Women’s Aid. Grampian Women’s Aid offers a free, confidential and non-judgemental, specialist service to women, children and young people in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire who have experienced domestic abuse.

The LifewithArt tutors lead the group through the process of making friendship bracelets. The stunning bracelets were a big hit with everyone who got involved

This is really fun, I’ve never made a bracelet before

I am hooked, I want to make these at home

I’m going to make one for my daughter, I think she would love it especially since i made it myself

These colours I’ve chosen will go with my new outfit for an event I’m going to

The group have now moved on to their next project, to construct a colourful mosaic out of modelling clay which will be displayed at the new Grampian Woman’s Aid centre in Aberdeen. The group have been making tiles with some text, learning about the versatility of polymer clay and trying out various techniques. The tiles will be put together to form a staircase to reflect the GWA motto “With You Every Step of the Way”.

I feel a staircase would be reflective of the journey that the women go through, from the bottom of the dark steps, rising to the colourful top steps where the sun and sunset meets them

The women have been enjoying their project and are looking forward to seeing the end result.

Art class is the highlight of my week, I really look forward to coming

I love that we are learning new things all the time

This is so therapeutic, The time just flies by
